Ankle Sprain

This is a very common injury and most often occurs when your foot rolls inwards putting a stretch on the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. This can happen when you are running and stumble on an uneven ground or are knocked off balance by an opponent in a game situation (football, netball, etc). It can also occur in any day to day activity such as tripping up/down a curb/step or walking on uneven ground.

In mild cases you will feel some pain on the outside of the ankle and may or may not be able to continue the activity. You may also develop some swelling around the ankle later that day or the following day.

In more severe cases you may not be able to put any weight on that foot due to considerable amounts of pain and ankle may swell up significantly. If this is the case it would be sensible to have an x-ray to confirm you have not sustained a fracture before weight-bearing again.

Physiotherapy is very important when recovering from this kind of injury especially if you wish to return to your sporting or physical activity. We can offer treatments to speed up the healing process, restore the movement available at the ankle joint, prescribe exercise programmes to increase your strength, balance and confidence as well as support you throughout the rehabilitation process to allow you to return to your lifestyle prior to your injury.
