Fractures (Broken Bones)

Fractures normally occur during impact sports, from a heavy fall or accident. Some fractures will cause pain, swelling and bruising but do not look significantly abnormal whereas more severe fractures displace the bone and you can see part of the bone pushing through the skin or even piercing it. If you suspect a fracture you should seek medical attention by attending A&E where they will normally carry out an X-ray to examine the injured bone.

If a fracture is confirmed your doctor will advise you on how to proceed to start your recovery. It would be sensible to contact a physiotherapist who would be able to support you through your recovery and help you return to normal functioning. We would;

  • prescribe exercises to help you maintain your strength and fitness throughout the rest of your body while your bone heals
  • provide manual therapy once the bone has healed to restore the mobility of the joints around the injured bone
  • prescribe exercises to restore strength and endurance of the muscles around the injured bone
  • Help to rebuild any loss of confidence due to the injury
  • develop an individualised rehabilitation programme to ensure a full recovery allowing you to return to your normal lifestyle (work, hobbies, sport, etc)
