Back Pain

Back Pain

Back Pain is very common!  It is rarely something serious, and can be managed very well with physiotherapy and some changes to your daily routine.

A typical routine for many people would be to spend the majority of the day sedentary in their job, then perform like an athlete when they exercise first thing in the morning, in the evening or at weekends. This doesn’t prepare the body particularly well for what you are asking it to do. Trying to keep moving during the day, with simple mobility exercises and stretches can help.

Pacing when you exercise is key. You can’t hit it 100 miles an hour every session.  Not even professional athletes do this.  You should consider your training as a lifestyle, therefore steady progression is key.  Fluctuating your intensity is the best way to train.

We also become very protective of our backs, unlike other parts of our body, which can be unhelpful too.  It is an extremely robust structure and takes a lot for it to be injured. That’s not to say that the pain you might experience isn’t significant.  However, it is important to understand that pain doesn’t correlate well with damage.  Paper cuts are extremely painful, but only a few layers of skin are damaged!  Stubbing your toe can be a killer, but we very rarely even think about it 10 mins later!

So!  The way we respond to a pain event in our backs is very key.  Bed rest is a no no.  Pushing through the pain might not always be that sensible either.  However, it is extremely important that you keep moving, performing exercises that mobilise the spine, relaxing with movement and doing a little more each day.

Physiotherapy is a very useful service for back pain.  Physio’s have a great understanding of anatomy and physiology, in order to enable them to diagnose your condition.  They can guide you in the right direction for pain management, set individually tailored exercise programmes and coach you back to your normal fitness levels.
