Pre and Post Event Sports Massage
You dedicate days, weeks, months and even years training hard to prepare for your sporting event,
you aim to improve on last years’ time, play to win or want to achieve your own personal goal but are you doing everything possible to achieve that goal?
Getting fitter and stronger is more than just what you put into your training. Allocating time for recovery, nutrition and sleep is what will take you to the next level. The popularity and importance
of pre and post event sports massage is continuously increasing as more athletes are becoming aware of how important recovery is and the physiological and psychological benefits it has on them.
Sports massage will enhance your physical performance regardless of what sport/physical activity
you participate in. It is a key component in the maintenance of musculoskeletal health and
prevention of injury. Regular sports massage also detects muscle fatigue, postural imbalances, mobility issues, as well as strains and sprains. It becomes a weekly/monthly routine for athletes or
anyone who has a desire to enhance their health and wellbeing and optimise their athletic performance.
Any kind of sport can cause extreme stresses to the body, through contact sport or endurance running or short sharp explosive bursts of energy, all of those put strains through the muscles and
joints that need to be maintained and cared for to prevent risk of injury. This is where sports massage comes in. It is completely individual for each person; your therapist needs to know your individual needs and will work with you to get you back to performing at your best.
Pre event sports massage will often occur a day or two before your sporting event. This helps to prepare the muscles, loosen off any tighter areas and helps to recover from the training sessions leading up to the event. Deep massage is avoided to cause any soreness to the muscles. In some
cases, especially in team sports where a team may have their own sports therapist, players may receive a 10 mins pre-game sports massage just to stimulate the muscles, increase range of motion and help to get warmed up and prepared for the game.
Post event sports massage can be done immediately after the event but is mostly administered 24-48 hours post event. The aim of post event massage is to increase the recovery time and reduce
soreness and inflammation in the muscles. It allows players to return to training quicker after the event. It can also identify any injuries that may have occurred during the event and therefore can be treated appropriately.
